I would like to see the following eventually integrated into GrabCAD:
*I have some bias as I am a co-chair of DICOM WorkingGroup 17.
Hi Justin,
I wasn't familiar with DICOM encapsulated STLs before this question, but I can see the benefit of (1) to workflow and traceability.
For (2) are you thinking of storing the material settings from a print within a DICOM file so that everything you need to print lives within the DICOM (including anatomy scans that show how the STL is made)?
Sorry, didn't see your response (would love for better notifications via email for GrabCAD).
On point 2, that is correct. Again, traceability and workflow would be my primary concern. Leveraging existing systems within a hospital is always easier than creating a new system with considerable redundancies.
Great idea! I think supporting the Query/Retrieve within GCP will be useful to hospital users.
About the model properties, I think the best option will be to encapsulate the .Print file as a Dicom. this will keep exactly all the printing properties for future evaluation or re-printing.
As part of your role, Do you think there is a possibility of this being considered?
I don't see this happening as part of the official DICOM standard; the standard attempts to be license free and open in addition to broad use across vendors. However, it may be feasible for a private tag. Let me inquire within DICOM and see what this would look like.
I have a response from the DICOM Working Group 14. They do allow manufacturers to establish private elements that you could store your proprietary format. I'd like to take the rest of this offline via email. Whom should I in include in that discussion?
If you don't receive the email within an hour (and you've checked your Spam folder), email us as confirmation@grabcad.com
