Hello again,
I have come across this design for a concrete block used for coastal protection, called a dolos, that is quite interesting to model in CAD. The tricky part is the chamfer, that, as far as I can tell, has to be modelled manually...?
I guess that the challenge is to reduce the number of features (as calculated by Solidworks). I haven't been able to go below 20!
Hi Steen!
Small concrete object very nice to model, uh on AutoCAD it's sure that I exceed 20 actions... I'll be strapolating because I'm missing a few climbs to be as ready as possible
Hi Steen!
In SolidWorks I used 10 operations (counting the creation of 1 reference plane).
I guess I did something wrong...
Regards!
Uhmm, I have a question when we talk about "operations".
If I make a sketch and then extrude it... do we count it as 1 or 2 operations? Something similar happens with reference geometries: would creating an axis or a plane be counted as operations?
I refer to the Solidworks function 'Feature Statistics' located in the Evaluation tab. This lists a Sketch as one feature and an operation (such as extrusion) as another feature. A plane (and similar referance elements) are also features.
'Feature Statistics' also lists the rebuild time, which can vary wildly depending on which methods are used to arrive at the geometry.
Ahhh, so there was the magic! And the "10 operations" I indicated are actually "15" according to the report you indicate:
You still used 5 features less than my best effort...
... and I can't quite figure out how you did it.
The only thing I think saved me some operations was "cutting out the problematic chamfer area" and filling it with two extrusions "at an angle and up to the solid".
Inventor. 9 Features. (Or 13 if you count sketches as a feature.)
Not sure if the final combine feature is mandatory but I always like to finish with a single solid.
Bob, I must say that you are dangerously contributing to our friend Steen's depression!!!
Steen, don't worry!
It's not you, it's him, the damn SolidWorks that doesn't know how to be concise.
Maybe we should switch to Inventor and stop suffering!
Don't be sad Steen. Yes, I know that there are people that can go below 9 or 13 features. Let's just change the competition a little bit and see who can get the most features. I raise the bar to 30 with Inventor!
(I'm joking please do not send a model with 100+ ops)
Thanks for your concern :)
I have been travelling for a few days without access to Solidworks :(
