Cut irregular shapes in surface of dome/sphere

I am trying to produce a fret cut irregular pattern detail in a dome/sphere spinning - Ideally I would like to make various symbols of the patterns and use hole wizard to apply them to the surface of the dome - is it possible to create custom irregular shaped holes within hole wizard?

solidworks seems to hate rounded surfaces. as far as i have heard, it is impossible to edit any surface on a curved sphere or dome in solidworks

No, the hole wizard is for standard drilled, countersunk, counterbored, or tapped holes with only minor dimensional modifications. Sounds as if you want to cut shapes, not holes, and to a depth offset from the spherical surface. Not sure what you mean by dome/sphere spinning? But if you are talking about symbols, you are going to have to construct them much like block letters of text. Unless you can create these as a font file, you are not going to be able to wrap them to your spherical surface, but only as an extruded cut normal to its spherical position.
