Is there technically a method to label dimension of the true length of a spline object such as a 3D model of a chain?

OK, theoretically speaking, in engineering drawing, is there any sort of annotation or standard to label the dimension of real length of a spline object, say a metal chain, in the drawing? In my case here I have a 3D model of a metal chain, with curves as it is free to deform, made predominantly with the spline tool in SolidWorks. So when imported the part into the 2D drawing template, how can I tell viewers the true length of the curvy chain on the drawing piece itself just like how we dimension every important geometry, rather than state the chain's length in the title block? Making a dimension parallel to the vantage point of the chain is totally futile because nobody is interested to know about the shape of the curve etc. Is there actually a way or convention to adhere in order to dimension its perimeter/length on the drawing piece? Please advise. Thanks upfront.

I would just call it out with a note that says something like, "LENGHT WHEN STRAIGHT = XX.XX. Also, in Solidworks you can create a 'smart dimension' that dimensions the overall length of the spline, which you can then use the dimension name to drive the note on the print so that if the chain length changes, the note updates automatically, or show the dimension itself on the print, if it displays in a good place.

If there is a reason to depict the chain in a separate drawing with some level of detail, make a model of it in a straight line. Place an overall dimension for the length, then break the drawing view so a few complete links (to show other dimensions, or a section view) are present. No need to depict a full length of chain in a drawing.

If there is no reason for a separate chain drawing, and it is just part of an assembly, add a "length" or similar column to the bill of material. Place the desired length, or required number of links there (depending on how the length is determined).
