How can I open STEP file in SOLIDWORKS?
Learn how to open a STEP file in SOLIDWORKS. Follow this step-by-step guide so you can open STEP Files without any problems!
Step 1: Start
Start SOLIDWORKS.
Step 2: Menu
Click File Menu and choose Open.
Step 3: Change file type
Change file of type to STEP AP203/214.
Step 4: Locate the STEP file
Now browse to location where the STEP file is. In mine case it is on desktop.
Step 5: Open the file
Double click the file and it is opened. An import Diagnostics dialogue is displayed. You can click no for now.
Step 6: Success
Now the part is opened. You have just successfully opened a STEP file in SOLIDWORKS!

But how to preview it? - to view file before it is open, like if you enable medium icons in a folder, you will see SW part or assembly content without opening file, and it is easier if you are looking for something specific.

You can edit this part using standard features. You can't edit features until you use recognise features which is not always successful. Also if the editing work doesn't involve geometry change, you can always use direct editing.
