MACHINE SHOP TRICK - BM001

Safe way to accurately measure the depth of a machined socket when space makes it difficult to use measuring instruments.

IMPORTANT: In this case we are using a Facing Boring Head to machine the bottom of the socket.

  1. Step 1:

Using precision blocks with the desired size and a dial indicator mounted on its magnetic base (Note that the magnetic base is mounted on a parallel so that the dial can be moved smoothly and securely). Set the dial indicator to ZERO on the surface of reference...

  2. Step 2:

    ZERO on reference...

  3. Step 3:

Gently slide the tip until it rests on the precision blocks. The dial will indicate how close you are to the desired size. In this example 0.0045”.

Then you can continue to raise the milling machine table by the same amount and cut the final 0.0045”.
